High school and college coaches are in near unanimous agreement that athletes should not specialize in just one sport. High school athletes are encouraged to run track in the offseason to improve speed, while playing baseball or softball can improve reflexes.
While many sports are complementary, many coaches agree, there are two sports that go hand in hand. Football coaches love offensive and defensive linemen who wrestle, and wrestling coaches love a 285-pounder who has experience fighting in the trenches.
The Circle High School boys basketball team accomplished something they had not done since 2013 — beat AVCTL DIII foe McPherson.
There are very few similarities between Circle’s win seven years ago and their win Friday, Feb. 15. Both wins were at home, but even the gym has been changed and updated since then.
Twice a part of the annual "Weighting Game" feature in Kansas Pregame Football Magazine, Clifton-Clyde senior Drake Steinbrock is known for his feats of strength. While others play basketball or wrestle during the winter, Steinbrock travels to powerlifting meets across Kansas where he competes against a barbell and multiple 45 pound plates.
Riley County seniors Luke Richard and Mikey Waggoner took home regional titles from Rossville last weekend and hope to cap their high school careers with a state championshp this weekend at the 3-2-1A Kansas High School Wrestling Championships at Gross Memorial Coliseum on the campus of Fort Hays State University.
Each wrestler enters the tournament ranked first in their respective classification - Richard at 145 and Waggoner at 170 - and the duo is a combined 70-0 on the season. The Falcons qualified seven wrestlers for state in winning the Rossville regional.
The Class 3-2-1A Beloit regional featured zero ranked teams. However, the regional had a high number of elite competitors, including three undefeated wrestlers with Minneapolis’ Tyson Villalpando, Rock Hills’ Zane Colson and Ell-Saline’s Nick Davenport. Five wrestlers are ranked first: Smith Center’s Jaden Atwood, Colson, Villalpando, Hoisington’s Wyatt Pedigo and Davenport at 138, 152, 182, 195 and 220, respectively.
Though some regional tournament starts were delayed by “Old Man Winter,” all tournaments wrapped-up by the end of the day Saturday and the field is set for next weekend’s state tournaments.
Regional host sites included Garden City High School and Blue Valley High School (Overland Park) in class 6A; Bonner Springs and Arkansas City in class 5A; Chanute, Smoky Valley (Lindsborg), Paola and Pratt in class 4A; and Beloit, Fredonia, Rossville and Trego Community (WaKeeney) in class 3-2-1A.
