CHASE - There may not be a better inspirational story in the state than the one developing here in rural central Kansas.

The Chase Kats have a real life hero these days. He’s 4-foot-7, 95-pound sophomore Layd’n Hinderliter, who the past eight years has battled cancer. He was eight when he was told he had Neuroblastoma Stage 4 cancer, a rare form of cancer that develops in nerve tissue.

One of Isaac Kane’s biggest fans continues to provide inspiration even five years after her death. 

“I’ve always lived to run and have always wanted to be the fastest kid from middle school till now,” the Jefferson County North senior standout said. “I ran for my grandma who passed in 7th grade. I used to run circles around the house and she’d time me. I was always her little track star and I want to live up to those standards.”

Her name was Carolyn Kane.

SP Pop-up Combine sees great turnout

Sharp Performance hosted a free pop-up combine at Kansas Wesleyan on Saturday and nearly 70 athletes from sixth grade all the way up to current juniors were tested in the broad jump, vertical jump, 40-yard dash, and pro agility drill. For many it was their first time to do combine testing and provided the young athletes testing experience and a baseline heading into the summer.

A number of the athletes posted good marks on the day and several showed off a mix of size and athleticism that may just translate to the college football field.

Snyder Family/Sunflower Chapter of NFF, Kansas Shrine Bowl recognize leaders

The Coach Bill Snyder Family/Sunflower Chapter of the National Football Foundation has announced its special recognition awards for the 2023-24 academic year.

The winners will be honored at the annual chapter awards dinner to be conducted May 8 at the Burge Union on the campus of the University of Kansas in Lawrence. Check-in and a reception begins at 5 p.m., with dinner at 6 p.m. A limited number of tickets will be available to the public by contacting jbollig84@gmail.com
