Driggers digs deep

Like Timex watches, Hillsboro Trojan junior Seth Driggers takes a licking but more importantly keeps on ticking as the Timex commercials once said.

Last year he injured his hip in the back half of the track season while triple jumping. That injury only worsened by regionals.

“At the regional meet, even though I should have had the marks to make state, I fractured my hip coming out of the blocks for the 200 and the season ended there,” Driggers said.

Hoxie wrestling finds next leader

After winning the last four 3-2-1A state titles veteran Hoxie coach Mike Porsch (far right) has decided to hand the reins of the program to Ryan Etherton (standing next to Porsch). After 17 years as head coach of the Hoxie wrestling program, Mike Porsch is stepping aside to pave the way for a new leader. Porsch has coached the Indians to the last four 3-2-1A State Championships, including a record-breaking 2023 victory that saw the Indians score 260 points, more than twice that of second place Norton. A Hoxie graduate and standout wrestler for the Indians in the late 1980s, Porsch went on to serve as an assistant to Hall of Fame coach Kirk Baker for 10 years before taking over for him after his retirement in 2006.

Nex-Tech Wireless Supporting Cast: Will Ast

Ingalls grad Will Ast is giving back to the high schools in his area by helping to alleviate an officiating shortage, all while carrying a full-time academic load at Garden City Community College. (Photo: Sandy Myers)

In a time when men and women have left officiating in droves, William Ast has stepped up in a big way.

The 19-year-old 2023 Ingalls High graduate has been reffing four and sometimes five nights a week on top of being a full time student at Garden City Community College.

“I’ve loved officiating ever since elementary school and it’s always been something that I’ve wanted to do,” said Ast, a standout hurdler at Ingalls. “Plus there’s such a shortage of officials right now, I thought it would be good to help.”
