St. James Academy girls look to go the distance

Distance dominant and right on track. That’s the position the St. James Academy girls track team finds itself as it enters Class 5A regional action. The past three seasons, co-head coach Greg Bomhoff’s girls ended matters as runners-up at the 5A Kansas state track and field championships.

Chapman hires Gruver to lead girls basketball team

Chapman High School went 35 miles north to find its next girls head basketball coach.  Drew Gruver will be the next head coach of the Chapman girls basketball team, according to athletic director Clint Merritt.

More state gold on the mind for Holcomb’s Armstrong

► “It was kind of cool to break it and to talk to him at the meet after I broke it,” Armstrong said.  ► Armstrong is a three-sport athlete. In the fall he runs cross country and in the winter he plays basketball.

Two of the best in Kansas continue to shine at Olathe Northwest

Olathe Northwest’s Maddie Righter came into the season as the favorite in 6A to win the state championship in both the high jump and long jump. Teammate Jaleesa McWashington is Righter’s closest competition in the long jump. McWashington is also the top returning state medalist in the triple jump.

Augusta, Andale/Garden Plain look like top teams in 4A softball

Entering Monday's doubleheader, it was clear the top two teams in Class 4A were Andale/Garden Plain and Augusta, although in which order had yet to be determined. Both teams were looking like championship frontrunners at 14-0, and for the most part neither team had been challenged.

Dewey, Casey lead solid Plainville track squad

Aubree Dewey’s energy and enthusiasm carries over into every sport she plays. Dewey is perhaps most well known for her success with the Plainville basketball team, but in the fall she succeeds in cross country and now in the spring she is one of the state's top track athletes.

BV North football player gives back to community

Last summer, Blue Valley North senior Stephon Camp was driving through his old Kansas City neighborhood when the sober reality of his surroundings sunk in. The poverty, the violence, the destruction was apparent. It led Camp to a realization, and that realization led to action.
