Nearly 200 attend SP Showcase

Nearly 200 Kansas high school football players braved brutal spring weather conditions at Salina Stadium on Saturday, April 30th, for the annual Sharp Performance Open Showcase. The event was loaded with some of the state’s top players and saw several athletes emerge as college football prospects following testing, skills sessions and one-on-ones.

Highland Park junior Tyrell Reed enjoyed perhaps the biggest day at Saturday’s event and earned offers from Butler Community College and Bethel College at the event. Reed ran a 4.39 hand-timed 40-yard dash, a 4.37 pro agility shuttle, posted a 36.5 inch vertical jump, a 103 inch broad jump and added three reps of 225 on bench at 5-9, 190.

Reed transferred to Highland Park from Topeka West early last season and together with Tre Richardson provided the Scots one of the most explosive backfields in Topeka. Reed rushed for 884 yards on just 73 carries with 10 TDs at HP. 

Reed is also one of the fastest sprinters on the track this season and like Richardson has recorded a 10.5 second 100 meter dash.

Ethen Allen, 5-8, 160.8, DB, Garden City, 2024, @EthenAllen0509
 
Just a sophomore, Allen showed off impressive speed and athleticism at Saturday's Showcase - posting a 4.67 40, a 28.1 inch vertical and a 102 inch broad jump. He slipped on both pro agility attempts but his ability to change direction was evident.

While he tested well, he looked most comfortable working with other defensive backs in drills where he displayed a low center of gravity, smooth backpedal and good tracking and breaking ability. Great upside for this 2024 athlete who should be a starter in the Buffalo defensive backfield this fall. His height will be a concern for college recruiters, but the potential is there.
 
During this past season, Allen recorded 10 tackles, a pass deflection, and a fumble recovery in limited varsity action over the course of seven games.

Ian Andalon, 5-5, 160.8, RB/DB, Salina South, 2024, @ian_andalon
 
Andalon showed off good speed, quick feet and good strength for his size at Saturday's Showcase. He was forced to step into key varsity roles on both sides of the ball for the Cougars last fall when injuries knocked out a pair of starters in the first two weeks of the season. Coaches call him an incredibly nice kid who always has a smile on his face and "works his tail off." Also gets high marks for blocking and physicality.

Andalon tallied 104 carries for 374 yards rushing last season for a one win Salina South squad and 27 tackles on defense. His measurables at the combine included a 4.79 40, a 4.31 pro agility, a 29.8 inch vertical, a 99 inch broad jump, and 13 reps of 185 on bench.

Height will be a concern for recruiters but athleticism and work ethic could see Andalon pick up offers as a defensive back or running back. The soon-to-be junior maintains a 4.0 GPA.

Callen Barta, 6-1, 170, DB, Topeka Seaman, 2024, @Callen_Barta06

The younger brother of 2022 QB/DB Camden Barta, an Emporia State signee, Callen showed why he could walk in his brother’s footsteps this season recording a blazing fast 4.22 pro agility drill, a 33.3 inch vertical jump, a 111 inch broad jump, a 4.71 40-yard dash and six reps at 185 pounds on bench press.

Callen recorded 42 tackles, two tackles for loss and five interceptions last fall for a 6-4 Vikings team that narrowly lost in the second round of the playoffs to Blue Valley Southwest. The younger Barta also contributed to Seaman’s first ever basketball championship from his role on the bench, including an early season stint as the team’s sixth man while more experienced players recovered from injuries.

Just a sophomore, Barta has plenty of time to add weight and maintain his speed. Plus, his ability to change direction provides him the tools to play safety or corner at the next level. Perhaps a reunion with older brother Camden will come in the Emporia State defensive backfield in a couple years, or perhaps an expanded role on offense this fall will lead to opportunities on that side of the ball in college.

Holden Bass, 6-2, 277, OL/DL, Nemaha Central, 2024, @HoldenBass

Bass continues to turn heads at Sharp Performance events with his mix of size and athleticism. One of the nicest kids you’ll ever meet, Bass is rarely found without a smile on his face. The Nemaha Central sophomore who shared his goal of playing football for the University of Kansas following a Sharp Performance event a year ago looks like he could have the tools to make that dream a reality.

At 6-2, 272 pounds Bass posted a 5.0 second 40 yard dash, a 28 inch vertical jump and a 93 inch broad jump at Saturday’s Showcase and the humble giant continues to improve in the shot put and discus ring as well, going over 50 feet in the shot just last week and nearly 150 in the discus. A versatile three-sport athlete Bass is also on the Thunder basketball team and provides a menacing post presence known for rebounding and defense.

Along the Thunder defensive line last season Bass recorded 54 total tackles, 12 tackles for loss, three sacks, one forced fumble and one knocked down pass, though his future at the next level may be along the offensive line. Together with 6-5, 285 pound 2023 standout Conner Deters the Thunder will again have one of the biggest guard/tackle duos on one side of the line in the state of Kansas this fall.

Samuel Becker, 6-3, 205, TE/DT, McPherson, 2023, @_Samuel_Becker

Becker spent last season at defensive tackle due to an excess of defensive end talent for the Bullpups, but will likely move back to end for the 2022 season. From his D-tackle spot last year he managed 92 tackles and three tackles for loss, while he brought in eight receptions for 123 yards and three touchdowns as a tight end. Becker earned all-league first team honors defensively and second team honors as a tight end.

At the Saturday’s Showcase, Becker displayed a strong assortment of abilities for his big frame, including 13 reps of 225 on bench, a 31.2 inch vertical, a 101 inch broad jump, a 4.4 pro agility, and a 4.95 40.

Outside of football, Becker is an important piece for the perennial powerhouse Bullpup basketball program and was a state qualifier in the 4x400 last season in track and field. In the classroom he maintains a 4.0 GPA.

Becker has an impressive frame with room to add weight and a noticeable burst with excellent speed for his size. Currently has interest from the University of Central Oklahoma and Drake and could be a sleeper in this class. Becker would like to pursue a career in Mechanical Engineering.

Malachi Berg, 6-1, 204, QB, Topeka West, 2023, @malachiberg2004

If Berg’s former Topeka West teammate Tyrell Reed was the MVP of Saturday’s Showcase then Berg was likely the runner-up. Widely regarded as the top QB at the event, Berg showed off a great mix of size, speed, throwing ability and all-around athleticism. Already on most area DIs radar Berg has camp invites to K-State, KU and Mizzou this summer with interest growing throughout the Midwest.

Berg ran 4.66 in the 40, jumped 29.3 inches in the vertical and 105 inches in the broad while also benching an impressive eight reps at 225. He slipped on both his pro agility tries so the numbers didn’t accurately reflect his ability to change direction quickly.

He reported stats of 997 yards with 12 TDs and only two interceptions on 70 of 120 passing for the Chargers last fall to go along with 672 yards rushing with eight more scores on 82 carries for a 3-6 squad. He was also a starter for a state qualifying Topeka West basketball team that won 21 games on the season.

Pablo Bermudez, 5-9, 170.2, WR/DB, Cheylin, 2024, @PabloBermudez0

Bermudez had a productive year last fall despite missing three games mid-season to injury. The sophomore caught 22 passes for 294 yards and five touchdowns, while recording 34 tackles and four interceptions as a defensive back. He was named 6-Man all-state honorable mention by Sports in Kansas and was also recently featured by SIK after triple jumping 41 feet, just 10.5 inches off the school record, Conor Nicholl wrote in the article.

At Saturday’s Showcase, Bermudez recorded a 4.96 40, a 4.4 pro agility, a 30.3 inch vertical and a 102 inch broad jump. With classmate Logan McCarty back to distribute the ball Bermudez will be counted on to be a key target offensively as the Cougars enter the first year of KSHSAA sanctioned 6-Man ball.

Nolan Bevan, 5-5, 162, RB/CB, Valley Center, 2023, @nolan_bevan

Bevan is consistently one of the fastest athletes at these events and Saturday was no exception as he recorded a 4.5 second 40 yard dash and a 4.18 pro agility drill while also displaying quick feet in running back drill work. The powerfully built Valley Center athlete also benched 185 for seven reps, posted a 28.6 inch vertical jump and broad jumped 98 inches.

Last year Bevan rushed for 540 yards for the Hornets on 125 carries and this track season he has recorded personal best times in the 100 (10.91) and 200 meter dashes (22.51).

While Bevan’s height makes it a challenge to catch on at the college level his speed, strength and change of direction should earn him looks in both the offensive and defensive backfields.

Ty Birkenbaugh, 5-10, 177, OL/LB, Kingman, 2023, @BirkenbaughTy

Birkenbaugh helped Kingman to the semifinals for the first time in 49 years as a focal point on both sides of the ball last season. Along with clearing the way for a talented Kingman offense, he managed 126 tackles, nine sacks, and 10.5 tackles for loss. Birkenbaugh was named first team all-district and second team all-league at linebacker, as well as honorable mention for his work as an offensive lineman.

At the Showcase, Birkenbaugh posted a 4.78 40, a 4.51 pro agility, 13 reps of 185 on bench, a 30.9 inch vertical, and a 102 inch broad jump.

Garyson Booth, 5-10, 182, RB/LB, Holton, 2023, @GarysonBooth

Booth is part of a powerful and athletic group of returning skill players for the Wildcats along with Jace Boswell, Jayden Fletcher and Matthew Lierz - all who had outstanding days at Saturday’s Showcase. In 11 games last fall Booth rushed for 961 yards and 12 touchdowns on only 99 carries (9.7 ypc) and tallied 32 solos, 33 assists and two sacks on defense. Booth had an incredible day at the free combine running a 4.51 40, benching 185 for 19 reps, recording a 32.6 inch vertical and a 100 inch standing broad jump and he virtually matched that performance Saturday with a 4.55 40, 19 reps at 185 in bench and a 33.7 inch vertical but also showed off his ability to change direction with a 4.25 pro agility drill and his explosiveness with a 109 inch broad jump.

Booth, who carries a 3.782 GPA in the classroom, earned honorable mention All-Big 7 League recognition at both running back and linebacker last fall and is a past state qualifier for the wrestling team.

Jace Boswell, 6-1, 218.2, FB/LB, Holton, 2023, @Jace_boswell 

Boswell showed off an impressive blend of strength and explosiveness on Saturday with 15 reps of 225 on bench, a 33.2 inch vertical, a 109 inch broad jump, a 4.75 40, and a 4.28 pro agility drill.

Last season Boswell helped lead the 11-1 Wildcats to the Sub-State round with 655 rushing yards and six touchdowns on 6.5 yards per carry, along with 47 tackles, three tackles for loss, and two sacks. Boswell was named first team all-state by Sports in Kansas at linebacker.

Boswell looks like a prototypical linebacker and has the mobility to play at a high level beyond high school. Boswell is a sleeper in this class and together with Lierz give the Wildcats two prospects that could pull some significant offers after a good summer at camps.

Troy Boyd, 6-4, 284, OL/DL, Chapman, 2023, @TroyRBoyd1

It isn’t hard to tell why head coach Kurt Webster sees Boyd as a future college football player. The DI sized lineman was a force last season and earned all-state honorable mention honors offensively. 

At the free combine Boyd recorded a 5.77 40, a 20.9 inch vertical, a 5.375 pro agility, and a 79 inch broad jump, before showing improvement on all measurables except the vertical jump at Saturday’s Showcase (20.5 inch) including a 5.59 40, a 5.08 pro agility, an 83 inch broad jump, as well as 6 reps of 225 on bench. Boyd also maintains a 4.0 GPA in the classroom.

Boyd carries his weight well on his 6-4 frame and continues to grow stronger with a 410 pound squat and a 260 pound clean. Boyd recently received offers from Butler and Garden City Community Colleges and Bethel College. He continues to receive interest from Division II and FCS schools as well. Boyd plays in a run heavy offense and is a very raw pass blocker. Improvement in this area put on display at camps this summer could see Boyd emerge as a top prospect in the class of 2023 in Kansas.

Ethan Burton, 5-11, 177.2, WR/DB, Council Grove, 2023, @Ethanb_17

Burton put together an impressive performance at Saturday’s Showcase, posting a 4.66 40, a 4.39 pro agility, and 14 reps of 185 on bench. His 124 inch broad jump and 36.4 inch vertical were two of the top marks in those events on the day.

The springy receiver finished last season with 24 receptions, 580 yards (school record) and six touchdowns, along with 33 tackles, five tackles for loss and an interception for Council Grove’s defense.

Burton also excels on the track where he currently holds personal bests of 10.93 seaconds in the 100 and 22.4 seconds in 200, both established earlier this season, with the latter a school record. In the classroom he maintains a 3.44 GPA.

Daeshaun Carter, 5-10, 187.4, RB, Maize, 2023, @CarterDaeshaun

Carter is one of the many valuable tools on the Swiss Army knife that is Maize High School’s offense. He rushed for 1,200 yards and 18 touchdowns last season - seven yards per carry - helping Maize to a 5A state runner-up finish. Carter was voted all-state honorable mention for his work at running back. 

At the Showcase, Carter ran a 4.82 40, a 4.36 pro agility drill, and also posted a 27.9 vertical and a 103 inch broad jump. Carter has an impressive build and should an opportunity to play running back not materialize after high school interested recruiters may want to take a look at Daeshaun as a linebacker or safety.

Together with receivers Justin Stephens and Bryce Cohoon, and four-star QB Avery Johnson, Carter is part of an absolutely loaded senior skill group returning for veteran coach Gary Guzman.

Rykan Carver, 6-0, 288, OL, Shawnee Heights, 2024, @RykanCarver

Shawnee Heights sophomore offensive lineman Rykan Carver continues to be among the strongest at these events throwing up 22 reps at 225 on the bench press to improve on the 16 reps he put up a year ago as a freshman. He also displayed solid mobility moving his 288 pound frame through 40 yards in 5.55 seconds and almost breaking the 5 second barrier in the pro agility drill. He rounded out testing with a 23 inch vertical jump and 80 inch broad jump. Carver, Alex McHardie and Gavin Zuperku provide the T-birds a trio of big men back to help with the graduation of standouts Orrin Busenitz, Diego Ruiz and Garrett Peery up front.

Colton Caswell, 6-0, 191.8, RB/FB/LB, Central Heights, 2024, @caswell_colton

In just eight games as a sophomore Caswell managed 245 rushing yards and three touchdowns on 13.6 yards per carry out of the backfield, while recording 44 tackles and four tackles for loss as a linebacker.

At Saturday’s Showcase, Caswell recorded a 4.61 40, a 4.57 pro agility drill, 14 reps of 185 on bench, a 30.9 inch vertical, and a 96 inch broad jump - all impressive numbers for a 6-foot underclassman weighing in at just under 200 pounds.

Should Caswell take a leap forward in his junior season this fall his recruiting interest could pick up.

Alex Coester, 5-11, 172.6, RB/OLB, Girard, 2023, @AlexCoester

Coester is part of a trio of Girard 2023s that attended Saturday’s Showcase and showed off why the Trojans had such a good season last fall. Coester posted a 4.84 40, 4.51 pro agility, three reps at 185 on bench, a 28.2 inch vertical and 99 inch broad jump.

Coester rushed for 648 yards on 108 carries and also added nearly 450 return yards. Coester is a two-way starter and together with Ethan Davidson and Luke Niggenman gives coach Neal Philpot a quality group of skill players back from last year’s 10-1 squad.

Braylon Council, 5-8, 134.4, WR, Great Bend, 2023, @braylon_council

Council was a bright spot on an 0-9 Great Bend team a season ago, recording 38 receptions for 469 yards and four touchdowns for the Panthers. The soon-to-be senior further impressed at the Saturday Showcase, recording a 4.74 40, a 31.3 inch vertical, a 107 inch broad jump, as well as five reps of 185 on the bench, all with a tweaked hamstring sustained earlier this track season. Council recorded a 4.65 40, 34.9 inch vertical and six reps at 185 at the mid-March Free Combine.

Council is also a member of the Panthers basketball team and was a state track qualifier last May in the 4x400.

While Council is undersized, he has great hands and runs quality routes. If he can add some weight and help the Panthers notch some wins this fall he should find some opportunities beyond high school.

Ethan Davidson, 5-9, 161.6, WR/OLB, Girard, 2023, @EthanDavidson_5

Davidson is the other piece of the Girard trio that was in attendance Saturday and the 2023 athlete showed why he was so versatile for the Trojans a year ago running 4.61 in the 40, 4.41 in the pro agility, posting a 30.7 inch vertical, and 110 inch broad jump and tallying eight reps at 185 on bench. 

Davidson impacted the offense from multiple spots on the field last fall rushing for 410 yards and four touchdowns on 44 carries, catching seven passes for 199 yards and three more scores, and returning six kicks for 263 more yards. Also a key piece of the defense, Davidson’s build and athleticism could translate well to a number of positions at the next level including running back, slot receiver or defensive back.

Owen Day, 5-11, 197.8, QB/MLB, Trego, 2023, @OwenD21x

Day tallied over 1,500 yards combined rushing and passing a year ago with 24 total touchdowns to lead the Golden Eagles to an outstanding 8-2 season. He was also a key piece of the Eagle D from his middle linebacker spot, recording 65 tackles, 6.5 tackles for loss, and a sack. He further proved his ability with a solid performance in his first ever Showcase experience running a 4.95 in his first ever timed 40 and a nice 4.31 in the pro agility drill. He also showed off excellent strength with five reps at 225 on bench and added a 29.3 inch vertical and 101 inch broad jump. More experience with testing will likely see Day lower his numbers.

While Day displayed a solid arm and mechanics during the QB sessions Saturday his height and build leave him projected as a linebacker at the next level. Film shows a solid tackler with a bit of a mean streak.

Day is one of the top all-around small-school athletes in Kansas earning all-league honors for his play on the basketball court and posting some of the top marks in the javelin and discus in all of 2A. While the Golden Eagles graduated some key pieces from the football team the return of Day and speedy running back James Kreigh give Trego the opportunity to post another successful season this fall.

Catch Delaney, 5-10, 179.4, RB/LB, McPherson, 2025

Just a freshman, Delaney tested well Saturday, showing off a nice mix of speed and strength. Bullpup coaches have high expectations for the young running back and linebacker who already hang cleans 290 and squats 355.

At the Showcase, he ran a 4.9 40 and a 4.38 pro agility, while posting a 29.3 inch vertical, a 101 inch broad jump, and 12 reps of 185 on bench.

Branton DeWeese, 5-11, 176.8, QB, Washburn Rural, 2024, @BrantonDeweese

Part of an absolutely loaded group of Washburn Rural athletes in attendance at Saturday's Showcase, DeWeese tested well and posted one of the top shuttle times on the day at 4.27. He added on a 4.91 40 - a bit slower than his 4.8 at the Free Combine - a 30.8 inch vertical, and a 103 inch broad jump.

Deweese had a promising sophomore season as a passer, going 132 for 205 with 1,640 yards and 21 touchdowns with only three interceptions. The underclassman earned all-state honorable mention for his efforts and gets back a number of his targets to work with again this season. He maintains a 3.7 GPA in the classroom.

Sammy Dresie, 6-0, 164.6, WR, Maize South, 2024, @SDresie

Dresie is a sleeper in the 2024 class. He showed off a nice mix of speed, change of direction, strength and explosiveness at Saturday's Showcase and he has proven results on the field including a 72-yard touchdown reception in a heartbreaking loss to Hays last October and a touchdown reception against Wichita Heights in the Mavericks' first round playoff win. On Saturday he put that mix on display with one of the day’s fastest 40 times at 4.59, along with a 4.35 pro agility, a 36.2 inch vertical and a 111 inch broad jump.

The sophomore is coming off of a 504 yard, four touchdown receiving season with 26 catches in helping the Mavericks to a 6-4 record. He earned all-state honorable mention for his efforts. Maize South coaches applauded his overall athleticism, his catch radius and his ability to make highlight reel catches. He is also a varsity athlete in basketball and in track and field where he was a member of the fourth place 4x100 relay and took sixth individually in the javelin at state.

Omari Elias, 5-7, 188.4, RB/S/LB, Kapaun, 2024, @OmariElias45

After an All-State sophomore season that saw him rush for 2,140 yards with 24 TDs, Elias enters the 2022 season as one of the top players in 5A for a Kapaun team that has thrived under coach Weston Schartz.

At Saturday’s Showcase he recorded a 4.95 40, a 4.28 pro agility, a 98 inch broad jump, 28.6 inch vertical, and 13 reps of 225 on bench.

Elias is virtually the total package: Strong, quick, and explosive with great vision and durability. His height and top end speed could be areas of concern for college recruiters but his personality, leadership skills and all-around development should alleviate those concerns.

Eric Erbe, 6-1, 169, QB, Chanute, 2023, @ericerbe1

One of the top returning QBs in 4A, Erbe showed improvement in key areas at Saturday's Showcase, including the 40 (4.75), pro agility (4.34), vertical (28.1) and bench reps (11-185). Meanwhile his 102 inch broad jump was just short of the 105 he posted at the Free Combine.

The signal caller is coming off of a junior season in which he passed for 1,718 yards and 25 touchdowns, and with talented targets Dagen Dean, Ty Leedy and Kaiden Seamster returning, the Blue Comets should have one of the top offenses in 4A this fall.

Outside of football, Erbe is a state champ as one leg of the 4x400 and 4x100 relays, is a letterwinner in basketball, and maintains a 3.75 GPA in the classroom.

Mason Faith, 6-1, 229.4, OL/DL, Rock Creek, 2025, @MasonFaith61

Faith started along the offensive line for the Mustangs last fall as a freshman and already benches 275 pounds, stands 6-1, weighs 229.4, and likely still has growing left to do. The underclassman moves well for his size and has tremendous upside and may emerge as one of the Top Prospects in the Class of 2025 for a Rock Creek team that has high expectations for this fall.

At the Showcase, Faith put up 16 reps of 185 on bench, recorded a 4.96 pro agility, a 5.3 40, a 23.9 inch vertical and a 90 inch broad jump - all numbers that should only improve in coming seasons.

Hudson Ferralez, 6-0, 182.4 QB, Hesston, 2024, @FerralezHudson

Arguably the top sophomore QB in the state last year, Ferralez went 193 of 274 passing for 2,436 yards and 27 touchdowns with only seven interceptions over the course of eight games, missing one due to illness. The underclassman earns high praise from coaches and plays QB against elite 7-on-7 competition with considerable success. Should continue to emerge as one of the top QBs in Kansas.

At the Saturday Showcase he recorded a 4.52 pro agility, a 26.8 inch vertical, and a 94 inch broad jump. With his touch in the passing game already firmly established, improvements on his measurables will only make him more dangerous down the road. In the classroom he maintains a 3.7 GPA.

Jake Fischer, 5-10, 208.2, RB/LB/DL, Kingman, 2023, @jakefischer40

Fischer has burst onto the scene at Sharp events this spring with his impressive strength and power and his sub 4.6 40 time on Saturday significantly raised his profile. With a reputation for hard work and a motor that won't quit, Fischer is one that could be ready for a breakout season this fall for a Kingman team that may again be a 2A contender after a semifinal berth last fall.

At the Showcase he tied for the second most bench reps at 225 on the day with 19, while also impressing with a 4.57 40, a 4.52 pro agility, 30.2 inch vertical and 100 inch broad jump.

As a junior, Fischer recorded 65 tackles, 2.5 sacks, seven tackles-for-loss, a forced fumble, a fumble recovery, and received 38 double teams from opposing offenses. For his work he earned first team all-league, first team all-district, and all-state honorable mention. Offensively, he had 31 carries for 160 yards and made an impact as a blocker as well.

Jayden Fletcher, 5-6, 175.6, RB/LB, Holton, 2023, @FletcherJaydenB

Incredibly powerful football player with tree trunks for thighs, Fletcher is part of an ever more impressive group of returners for coach Brooks Barta at Holton. He again tested well and also showed off great footwork and ball skills with the running back group, finishing just outside of the top five pro agility times on the day at 4.18, while also recording a 4.68 40, a 34 inch vertical, a 108 inch broad jump, and 22 reps of 185 on bench press.

Last season, Fletcher ran for 845 yards on 123 carries with 12 TDs, while recording 68 tackles, seven tackles for loss, two sacks, and three interceptions on defense. The junior earned all-state honorable mention and first team all-league at running back, along with all-league honorable mention at linebacker.

Nathan Fury, 5-11, 192, LB, Kapaun, 2023, @Nathanfury805

Fury was a tackling machine in Kapaun’s 5-2 defense tallying 134 tackles on the season and helping the Crusaders make the state semifinals. Fury received first team all-state honors at linebacker and is also a state placewinner on the wrestling mat, taking third at 182 last season.

At the Saturday Showcase, Fury had a particularly impressive day on bench with 15 reps of 225, and also posted a 4.62 pro agility, a 5.12 40, a 23.6 inch vertical and a 93 inch broad jump. While he didn't test exceptionally well, his ability to diagnose plays and make tackles make Fury a proven commodity. Together with teammates like Omari Elias, Will Anciaux and others the Crusaders appear poised for another excellent season under long-time City League coach Weston Schartz, now in his third season at Kapaun.

Kyreese Groen, 6-0, 171.6, QB/WR/ATH, Hays, 2023, @Kyreeseg3

While Hays High head coach Tony Crough sees Groen playing receiver at the next level, the multi-faceted junior is most likely to be taking snaps as a run-first quarterback this coming fall. During the 2021 season he was used at wideout (10 rec., 201 yards, 4 TDs), as a ball-carrier (27 car., 211 yards, 1 TD), and kick returner (five returns, 113 yards). Groen has minimal experience taking varsity snaps though, going just 3 for 5 for 42 yards passing last year.

At the Showcase he had the best vertical leap of the day at 38 inches, along with a 4.62 40 time, a 4.52 pro agility, and a 112 inch broad jump.

Groen, along with teammates Malik Bah, Remy Stull and Bryce Salmans appear poised to fill the holes left by graduation of arguably the best senior class in school history. A standout jumper for the track team with personal bests of 22-3 in the long jump and 43-7 in the triple, Groen could emerge as one of the top players in the WAC as he takes the reins at QB for the Indians this fall.

Gunnar Gross, 6-2, 203.8, QB, Salina Central, 2024, @GunnarGross9

After spending the last couple years sitting behind K-State commit Parker Kavanaugh, Gross is likely to get the reins in 2022 and showed solid measurables at Saturday's Showcase. Gross ran a 4.94 40 and a 4.7 pro agility and jumped 29.6 inches in the vertical and 101 inches in the broad jump.

The sophomore is also a standout baseball player for the Mustangs and maintains a 4.0 GPA in school.

Brett Hamilton, 6-1, 218.2,  QB/LB, Columbus, 2023, @bretthamilton_5

Hamilton showed promise while splitting time at quarterback with senior Jaxson Haraughty last season, going 38 for 86 passing with 653 yards and eight touchdowns to five interceptions over nine games, adding another 146 yards on the ground for four more touchdowns. Hamilton also added seven receptions for 60 yards and another score. Defensively, he recorded 35 tackles, a tackle for loss, and a pass deflection.

Hamilton recorded a 4.75 pro agility, a 23.7 inch vertical, and a 94 inch broad jump at the Saturday Showcase. 

The junior also excels on the basketball court - averaging 13.2 ppg as a junior - and on the baseball diamond, where he plays first baseman for the Titans. In the classroom he holds a 3.75 GPA.

Kade Harris, 5-9, 171,  QB/DB, TMP, 2023, @KadeHarris15

Harris led his team in passing with 904 yards, rushing with 901 yards, and finished second in tackles with 81 total, 10 of them for a loss, and was also the primary return man for the Monarchs as they found any reason they could to get the ball in his hands. His efforts were a key reason TMP enjoyed one of the best seasons in school history with an 8-3 finish an a second round playoff upset of Hoisington. Harris received first team all-state honors for his efforts at defensive back, along with an honorable mention nod at quarterback.

His performance at the Saturday Showcase added to his résumé as he recorded a 4.6 40, a 4.15 pro agility (fifth overall), a 32.6 inch vertical and a 113 inch broad jump.

Harris, a 3.8 GPA student, was all-league honorable mention in basketball as a junior - and a key member of a Monarch squad that finished fourth at the state tournament - as well as a state-qualifier in the long jump last spring.

JC Heim, 6-2, 210, RB/OLB, Washburn Rural, 2024, @heim_jc

Heim has a strong frame with good speed and explosiveness. His size and speed combination helped him record 74 tackles, eight tackles-for-loss, a sack, two fumble recoveries, and two forced fumbles on defense as a sophomore last fall. Offensively he rushed for 320 yards and five touchdowns on 44 carries, good for 7.4 yards-per-carry average. He earned all-league honorable mention at both running back and linebacker.

At Saturday's Showcase he recorded a 4.76 40, a 4.12 pro agility (fourth overall), a 29.9 inch vertical, a 110 inch broad jump, and 11 reps of 225 on bench press. Heim's prototypical linebacker build and well-rounded skillset could see him emerge as a top prospect in the class of 2024. 

Outside of football Heim maintains a 3.5 GPA, is a varsity player for the basketball team, and a member of the track team.

Erhik Hermosillo, 5-7, 145, QB/DB, Wichita County, 2023, @ErhikHermosillo

Hermosillo had a monster junior season at quarterback, passing for 1,771 yards and 24 touchdowns to go with 1,450 rushing yards for 25 more TDs, and helping Wichita Co. to a solid 6-3 mark. Hermosillo earned second team all-league, as well as first team Sports in Kansas 8-Man non-senior honors. 

At the Free Combine, the junior recorded a 4.81 40, a 5.25 pro drill, a 30.8 inch vertical, and 108 inch broad jump. While his numbers did regress a bit overall at the Showcase, they weren’t far off, posting a 4.83 40, a much improved 4.53 pro agility, a 30.3 inch vertical, and a 101 inch broad jump.

Hermosillo is also a standout on the hardwood and earned second team all-league for his efforts in the recently completed basketball season.

Mason Hernandez, 5-10, 180.8, WR/RB, Goodland, 2023, @MoneyBaggMase

Goodland’s junior receiver-running back hybrid showed flexibility for the Cowboys last season, running it 77 times for 410 yards and six TDs, catching 24 passes for 286 yards and five TDs, and going 4 of 7 passing for 108 yards and two more scores. He also served as the team’s punter, averaging 34.4 yards per punt and pinning three inside the 20.

Hernandez had a solid all-around performance at the Showcase, posting a 4.87 40, a 4.28 pro agility, a 29.4 inch vertical, a 110 inch broad jump, and eight reps of 185 on bench. 

Hernandez is also a multi-time state-qualifying wrestler, most recently taking fifth in 4A at 160 for the Cowboys in February.

Miguel Hernandez, 5-9, 155.4, QB/DB, Sublette, 2023, @Miguel_Hdz11

Hernandez did it all for Sublette in 2021, passing for 507 yards and three touchdowns, rushing for 869 yards and seven scores, and recording 107 tackles, two interceptions, two pass deflections, a sack, and three tackles for loss over the course of seven games. The junior earned all-state honorable mention at defensive back for his efforts.

At the Showcase, he showed off good speed with a 4.8 40 and a 4.61 pro agility, and also had a 99 inch broad jump, 27.2 inch vertical, and did seven reps of 185 on bench.

Hernandez is also a member of the baseball team and holds a 3.98 GPA in the classroom.

Sublette hasn’t enjoyed much success on the gridiron over the past decade, last posting more than two wins in a single season in 2011, with a 5-4 finish. The Larks won just a single game in each of the last three seasons. The switch to 8-Man and the return of Hernandez for second year coach John Le could signal an opportunity for improvement this fall.

Zane Hoback, 5-8, 170.8, RB/OLB/TE/P, Burlington, 2024

Over the course of six games last season, Hoback rushed 79 times for 325 yards and three touchdowns, good for a 4.11 yards per carry average, helping Burlington to a 4-5 record and earning himself a spot on the all-league team as a punter.

At the Saturday Showcase, Hoback posted the fifth fastest 40 of the day at 4.56, a 33.6 inch vertical, a 105 inch broad jump, and one rep of 225 on bench.

Hoback is also a member of the wrestling and track teams and qualified for state as part of the 4x400 relay last May.

Caiden Hoffman, 6-2, 312.4, OL/DL, Hoisington, 2024, @hoffman7667

Hoffman has impressive size and carries his 312 pounds well on his 6-2 frame. The sophomore helped Hoisington to a 20-3 record in his two years as a starter in head coach Zach Baird’s Flexbone offense and 3-4 defense, earning first team all-league and all-state honorable mention on an O-line that blocked for over 3,000 yards while also recording 15 tackles and a tackle for loss on defense. 

At the Free Combine in March, Hoffman showed off an impressive nine reps of 225 on bench, as well as a 5.98 40, a 5.3 pro agility, and a 74 inch broad jump. At the Saturday Showcase, he improved his bench press to 10 reps of 225, his 40 to a 5.83, broad jump to 80 inches, and had a 17.9 inch vertical leap.

His movement looked quick and fluid for a 300 pounder and he maintained a good base and low “pad” level in one-on-ones. A mild-mannered kid at the Showcase, coach Baird says he turns on the aggression when he crosses the white line on Friday nights.

Cooper Jay, 6-1, 288.8, C, Augusta, 2024

Jay’s mass alone makes him tough to get by for most defenders. The sophomore lineman was a lynchpin in Augusta’s power-focused Flexbone offense that was instrumental in the Orioles’ 6-4 finish last fall.

The sophomore had a strong showing at the Showcase as well, putting up eight reps of 225 on bench, and posting a 5.67 40, a 5.16 pro agility, a 22.6 inch vertical, and an 88 inch broad jump.

Coach Jason Filbeck has high expectations for Jay, who noted his big lineman recently recorded a 455 pound squat.

Micah Johnson, 5-10, 176, RB/KR, Goddard, 2024, @_Micah_Johnson0

Johnson was used primarily on special teams in his seven games for the Lions last season, returning 12 kicks for a 25.4 yard average and taking one back 100 yards for a TD. He also carried the ball on offense 16 times for 41 yards and caught a pass for 15 more yards.

D-coordinators should keep an eye out for his explosiveness after he was clocked at 4.61 in the 40 and also recorded a 28.4 inch vertical, a 109 inch broad jump, and seven reps of 185 on bench.

Chance Kerr, 5-11, 205.8, RB/FB/LB, Dodge City, 2023, @ChanceKerr10

After earning second team all-league honors as a sophomore, Kerr had a strong junior season, running the ball 60 times for 258 yards and two touchdowns offensively, and recording 26 tackles on defense over the course of seven games, helping the Red Demons to a share of the WAC title and a 6-3 overall record under new head coach Glenn O’Neil.

The junior had a good all-around performance at the Showcase, posting a 4.86 40, a 4.46 pro agility, a 27.5 inch vertical, a 101 inch broad jump, and 11 reps of 225 on bench. 

In the classroom, Kerr holds a 4.2 GPA and scored a 26 on his ACT.

Isaac Klug, 5-11, 169.8, WR/ATH, Newton, 2023, @isaacklug5

Klug earned second team all-league and all-state honorable mention at receiver last season after he caught 32 passes for 500 yards and two touchdowns. His speed and acceleration make him a constant home run threat and will be key if Newton is to improve on their 2-7 record under new head coach Greg Slade.

Klug’s day at the Showcase was a big one, tying for the fastest pro agility at 4.1 seconds, while notching a speedy 4.65 40, a 35.1 inch vertical, and a 113 inch broad jump, along with six reps of 185 on bench. 

Klug is also a member of the Railers baseball team and holds a 4.16 GPA in the classroom.

Jamond Lane, 5-9, 272, DL, Washburn Rural, 2024, @JamondLane

With PRs of 500 pounds on squat, 510 on deadlift, and 285 on bench, you don’t have to squint to tell that the 272 pound Lane can pack a punch. During his sophomore season he recorded 32 tackles and a tackle for loss on a loaded Rural team that finished 8-2.

At the Showcase, Lane recorded 11 reps of 225 on bench, a 5.2 40, a 4.75 pro agility, a 25.1 inch vertical, and a 97 inch broad jump. He also displayed impressive quickness in one-on-ones and his height helps him maintain a low center of gravity, but could be a concern for college recruiters.

Jack Lanning, 5-9, 175.8, QB/LB, Marion, 2024, @JackLanning_5

Lanning is a run-first quarterback that will surprise you with his arm. As a junior he went 39 for 86 for 586 yards and 3 passing touchdowns to one interception, while carrying the ball 146 times for 647 yards and 10 scores. Lanning earned all-district and all-state honorable mention at QB. On defense he recorded 44.5 tackles, 13.5 tackles-for-loss, five sacks, four forced fumbles, and four fumble recoveries. 

At the Free Combine he posted a 4.64 in the pro agility, along with a 4.99 40, a 102 inch broad jump, and a 28.3 inch vertical before beating all of those marks at the Showcase with a 4.5 pro agility, a 4.89 40, a 104 inch broad jump, and a 28.5 inch vertical. He also added six reps of 185 on bench.

Lanning maintains a 3.8 GPA and is also an infielder and pitcher for a good Marion baseball. Together with junior running back Trevor Schafers he gives the Warriors a quality tandem returning to the backfield this fall.

Seth LeClair, 6-3, 224.6, OL/TE/DE Clifton-Clyde, 2023, @seth_leclair

LeClair earned first team all-state defensive end honors by Sports in Kansas last fall after recording 51 tackles, three sacks, and a fumble recovery for a stout Eagle defense. The junior also helped to pave the way for a strong offense as Clifton-Clyde finished the season 7-2 with a playoff appearance.

LeClair shows good speed and explosiveness for his large frame and improved on all of his marks from the Free Combine at Saturday’s Showcase, running a 4.92 40 and a 4.57 pro agility. He also posted 11 reps of 225 on bench and showed a 29.6 inch vertical and 107 inch broad jump.

His mix of size, strength and speed should have college recruiters on notice. LeClair is a real sleeper in this class who is likely overlooked because he plays 8-Man.

Matthew Lierz, 6-0, 189.8, QB/DB/K, Holton, 2023, @LierzMatthew

Lierz led a potent Holton running attack that saw four rushers top 600 yards last fall. The 6-foot, 190 pound junior QB rushed for 719 yards on 54 carries for 12 touchdowns, good for an impressive 13.3 yards per carry orchestrating Brooks Barta’s Wishbone offense. He added 311 yards and six touchdowns through the air. Defensively, Lierz finished with 38 tackles, two interceptions, and a forced fumble that helped the Wildcats to an 11-1 record and a deep playoff run. Lierz was named all-state honorable mention at quarterback, as well as first team all-state at kicker after kicking off 68 times with a 49.3 yard average and five touchbacks. 

Lierz was one of several Holton athletes to post quality performances at the Sharp Combine in March with a 4.62 40, a 4.27 pro agility, a 105 inch broad jump and a 28.8 inch vertical. At the Showcase, he reinforced or improved on those measurables with another 4.62 40, a blazing 4.13 pro agility (top five fastest of the day), a 30.2 inch vertical and a 110 inch broad jump.

On the basketball court, Lierz was first team all-league in 2021 and is someone to keep an eye on in both sports during his senior season. In school he maintains a 4.00 GPA.

Like Boswell at linebacker, Lierz looks the part of a college safety. Lierz’s build, speed, ability to change direction and proven results on the field make him an intriguing prospect in the class of 2023.

Jaeden Martin, 5-10, 167.4, WR/S/KR, Maize, 2024, @yae_the_great2

Martin was one of many talented weapons Maize’s offense could turn to last season and should have an expanded role this fall. The sophomore receiver caught 12 passes for 141 and two touchdowns and also returned seven kicks for 24 yards per return and a score.

Martin posted a 4.8 40, a 4.58 pro agility, a 27.3 inch vertical and a 96 inch broad jump at the Showcase on Saturday and more importantly was one of the top route runners and pass catchers in one-on-ones.

Kaedin Massey, 6-8, 253.4, OL/DL, Lyndon, 2024, @KaedinMassey 

Massey is a fitting last name for Lyndon’s 6-8, 250 pound sophomore offensive and defensive lineman. His imposing size is fully backed by strength, with PRs at 260 on bench, 300 on clean, and 375 on squat. Last season he totaled 32 tackles, two sacks, and a tackle for loss, earning second team all-district at D-end for his efforts, though his skillset and length may better translate to the offensive line in college.

Massey tested well at the Showcase, showing off solid footwork for his size with a 5.12 40 and a 4.66 pro agility, as well as a 24.5 inch vertical, a 99 inch broad jump, and 10 reps of 185 on bench, all excellent measurables for a 6-8 sophomore not yet done progressing.

Massey - who spent his freshman year at Northern Heights - holds a 4.0 GPA and also plays basketball for the Tigers.

Logan McCarty, Cheylin, 5-11, 170, QB/LB, 2024, @logan_mccarty3

McCarty is already among the best two-way players in 6-Man entering his junior season. As a sophomore he was 100 for 165 with 1,345 passing yards and 23 touchdowns to six interceptions, and rushed for an additional 551 yards and 12 scores on 76 carries. As a linebacker, he had 85 tackles, five interceptions, two pass deflections and two hurry-ups on the opposing quarterback.

McCarty recorded a solid 4.82 40, a 4.28 pro agility, a 32.8 inch vertical, and a 98 inch broad jump at the Showcase. While the junior to be boasts excellent arm strength and accuracy from his quarterback spot he could fill multiple roles at the college level, either on offense or defense.

McCarty maintains a 4.0 GPA in the classroom and is the younger brother of former Cheylin standout Colton McCarty (Bethel College), who he won a state championship alongside two years ago.

Kenyon McMillan, 5-6.5, 142.2, RB, Salina Central, 2023, @Kenyon_mcmillan

Coming off of a season in which he rushed for 1,066 yards on 91 carries for a school record 11.7 yards per carry, McMillan could be in line for even more this fall given the graduation of Parker Kavanaugh (Kansas State) and Micah Moore from last season’s 7-3 Mustang squad.
 
McMillan had a strong showing at the Sharp Combine with a 4.45 40, a 4.59 pro agility, a 115 inch broad jump, and a 31.6 inch vertical.
 
McMillan had one of the fastest 40 times of the day at Saturday’s Showcase with a head turning 4.48.. He also was clocked at 4.27 in the pro agility, and had excellent marks with a 35.6 inch vertical and a 113 inch broad jump.
 
McMillan maintains a 3.6 GPA in the classroom and while his size may make college recruiters think twice McMillan’s speed and production could see him emerge as a significant prospect in an already loaded class of 2023 in Kansas.

Mario Menghini, 6-2, 192, RB/CB, Frontenac, 2024, @mariomenghini2

After gaining over 1,000 yards total offense as a sophomore in 2020, Menghini was a vital two-way member on Frontenac’s state runner-up squad last year, averaging 7.7 yards on 123 carries for 942 yards and 11 TDs, along with 19 receptions for 345 yards and three more scores. He also returned 11 punts for 181 yards and another score. Defensively, the ball-hawking junior recorded six interceptions and 42 tackles, earning first team all-state honors as a defensive back to go with an honorable mention nod at running back.

Menghini’s numbers at the Showcase stood out as well. A 4.61 40, 4.54 pro agility, 27.4 inch vertical, and 111 inch broad reinforced his speed and explosiveness, while his eight reps of 225 showed off surprising strength to match.

Menghini is also first team all-league in basketball and second team all-league in baseball for the Raiders.

Mathew Moeder, 6-0, 195.4, LB, Great Bend, 2023, @MathewMoeder

Moeder was a centerpiece of the Great Bend defense last season, recording 74 tackles, six tackles for loss, and a forced fumble. The junior earned first team all-league and all-state honorable mention honors for his efforts.

Moeder performed well at the Showcase, recording eight reps of 225 on bench, along with a 4.98 40, 4.5 pro agility, 27.6 inch vertical and 102 inch broad jump.

Moeder is also a member of the Panther basketball and track teams.

Nash Money, 5-8, 172.6, RB, 2023, Wellsville, 2023, @nashmoney4

Money packs a serious punch for his size and rushed for 1,572 yards and 30 touchdowns on eight yards per carry, helping Wellsville to a 10-1 mark with a sectional appearance, earning first team all-state for his efforts. 

At Sharp’s Free Combine, his 4.87 40, 106 inch broad jump, and 33.6 inch vertical were solid numbers, while his 15 reps of 225 put him among the day’s best at all positions. At Saturday’s Showcase he improved his 40 to 4.74, his vertical to 34 inches, and his broad jump to 110, while posting a 4.46 pro agility and matching his bench press results - which tied for fourth best of the day - at 15.

Money maintains a 3.2 GPA in school and his recruiting interest is on the rise.

Jameer Moore, 6-2, 156.4, WR/CB, Salina Central, 2024, @jameer_moore

Moore didn’t see a lot of varsity action as a sophomore for the 7-3 Mustangs, but the potential the underclassman has is undeniable. At the Showcase he ran a 4.62 40 and a 4.3 pro agility drill, along with a 113 inch broad jump and the day’s fifth highest vertical at 36.3 inches, all on a long and athletic frame.

Many coaches in attendance were impressed with Moore’s potential at the Showcase. Time in the weight room to add some mass along with more varsity experience should make Moore a valuable asset for first-year varsity quarterback Gunnar Gross and a key piece of the Mustang secondary.

Conner Neill, 6-0, 199.4, LB, Maize South, 2023, @ConnerNeill2

Neill earned all-state honorable mention at linebacker last season, recording 70 tackles, 11 tackles for loss, four forced fumbles, three fumble recoveries, four QB hurries, and a pass deflection, helping the Mavericks to a solid 6-4 mark.

Neill had a phenomenal day at the Showcase, finishing with the third fastest pro agility of the day running a 4.11, the second highest vertical at 37.3 inches, the second longest broad jump at 119 inches, and tied for the fourth best bench press performance with 15 reps of 225. His 40 was the only event he finished outside of the top five, but was still a solid 4.78. It should also be noted that at the Free Combine Neill put on display a 38.5 inch vertical - would have been the best at Saturday’s showcase - and a 121 inch broad jump.

Neill holds a 3.9 GPA in the classroom and is also an excellent weightlifter with PRs including 330 on bench, 425 on squat, and 340 on hang clean. Neill earned offers from Peru State and Benedictine after the Showcase and also has interest from South Dakota, South Dakota State, North Dakota, Dartmouth, and others.

Luke Niggemann, 6-3, 201.6, QB/FS, Girard, 2024, @LukeNiggemann

Niggemann earned all-state honorable mention after a productive sophomore season, going 59 of 116 passing for 1,069 yards and 17 touchdowns to four interceptions, with an additional 335 yards and seven touchdowns on 63 carries. His ability as a signal caller was instrumental in the Trojans 10-1 season that resulted in a Sectional appearance.

Niggeman had a solid showing at the Showcase, with a 4.61 40 and a 4.48 pro agility, along with six reps of 225 on bench, a 33.7 inch vertical and a 107 inch broad jump.

Niggeman also earned all-state honorable mention in basketball and received excellent reviews from coaches in attendance at the Showcase.

Jerrit Norris, 6-4, 186.4, WR/LB, 2023,Troy, @NorrisJerrit

Norris finished 2021 with 51 receptions for 783 yards and eight touchdowns, along with 102 tackles from his linebacker position. The 6-4 receiver posted a 5.13 40, 4.88 pro agility, 97 inch broad jump and 27.9 inch vertica at the Free Combine. His unique physical skill set helped him earn first team all-state at receiver, along with first team all-league at both positions.

At Saturday’s Showcase Norris recorded a 4.82 40 and 4.4 pro agility, along with a 31.2 inch vertical and 105 inch broad jump, significant improvements in all categories. Norris should emerge as a college prospect based on his frame and production alone. His performance at Saturday’s Showcase should only see his interest from college recruiters increase.

Norris maintains a 3.5 GPA and is a first team all-state basketball player who helped Troy to a state tournament appearance during his junior season.

Tyrell Reed, 5-9, 189.6, RB, Highland Park, 2023, @TbirdReed

As mentioned in the introduction, Reed had a huge day at the Saturday Showcase. Last season he was a standout on an 0-9 Scots team, gaining 884 yards yards and scoring 10 TDs on 73 carries in just seven games, good for a game breaking 12.1 yards per carry. The junior earned all-league honorable mention for his efforts.

The 10.5 100-meter runner showed off more of that speed on Saturday, posting a 4.39 40 and a 4.37 pro agility, along with a 36.5 inch vertical, 103 inch broad jump, and three reps of 225 on bench. His 40 was the fastest of the day, while his vertical was third best.

Reed took third at state in the 100-meter dash as a sophomore at Topeka West and holds a 3.3 GPA in the classroom.

Amr Sabbarini, 5-10, 175, WR, 2023, Washburn Rural, @Amr23Sabbarini

Sabbarini was a reliable target for QB Branton Deweese last season, catching 36 balls for 421 yards and seven touchdowns, and earning all-league honorable mention. With Robby Bolin - Rural’s leading receiver last season - committed to play baseball for Barton next year, Sabbarini is likely to get more opportunities to shine.

At Saturday’s Showcase Sabbarini posted a 4.87 40, a 4.6 pro agility, a 30.4 inch vertical, a 103 inch broad jump, and nine reps of 185 on bench.

Sabbarini is also a member of the track and field team.

Trevor Schafers, 5-11, 220.4, RB/LB, Marion, 2023, @TSchafers14

Schafers has a strong build that helped him to a 756 rushing yard season with 12 touchdowns offensively, along with 49 tackles, 11 tackle-for-loss, two interceptions, three forced fumbles, and four fumble recoveries on defense. The junior earned all-district at season’s end. 

At the Free Combine, Schafers recorded eight reps of 225 on bench, a 29.9 inch vertical, a 99 inch broad jump, a 4.83 40, and a 4.85 pro agility. At the Showcase he stayed consistent in most measurables, while improving his 40 slightly to 4.81 and pro agility to 4.66.

Schafers maintains a 3.8 GPA and also lines up at first base and pitcher for Marion baseball.

Grady Seyfert, 6-1, 267.4, OL/DL, 2023, Beloit, @GradySeyfert

Seyfert is an anchor for Beloit on both sides of the ball and cleared the way for one of the best running attacks in 2A on offense, while recording 64 tackles - 25 of them for a loss - as a member of Beloit’s stout defense. Seyfert earned first team all-state on both the offensive and defensive line after helping the Trojans to a 9-4 record and a state runner-up finish.

At the Showcase, Seyfert posted a 5.06 40, a 4.94 pro agility, a 25.3 inch vertical and a 95 inch broad jump, impressive numbers for a 6-1, 270 pound junior lineman. He also put up 15 reps of 225 on bench, tying for fourth most of the day.

Seyfert took third in the shot put (52-9.75) and fifth in the discus (150-10) at 3A state track last year and has personal bests of 172-5 in discus and 56-1 in shot this season. Seyfert’s father, Casey, is Beloit’s High School principal and a coach for football and track. He was a standout for the Trojans 1996 state championship team and went on to an excellent career as a defensive lineman on the football team and a thrower on the track team at Fort Hays State University.

Remy Stull, 6-0, 194.4, DB/OLB, Hays, 2023, @RemyStull

On a team known for offensive firepower, Stull was a stalwart piece on Hays’ defense. The junior totalled 61 tackles, four for loss, two interceptions, a forced fumble, and a fumble recovery. He received first team All-WAC and all-state honorable mention honors at defensive back and helped the 8-3 Indians to one of their best seasons in school history.

Stull had a strong performance at the Showcase, clocking a 4.7 40 and a 4.44 pro agility,, jumping 35.3 inches in the vertical and 113 inches in the broad jump, and repping 225 nine times on bench.

Stull also plays basketball and runs track while maintaining a 3.6 GPA.

Jett Vincent, Canton-Galva, 6-3, 180, WR/DB, 2023, @jett_vincent

Vincent caught 67 passes for 1,341 yards and 18 touchdowns offensively and recorded 125 tackles, six interceptions, nine pass deflections, five fumbles recoveries, and four forced fumbles on defense as a junior for Wheatland-Grinnell. In 2022, Vincent will suit up for state powerhouse Canton-Galva, where the all-state receiver will pair up with all-state quarterback Garrett Maltbie.

The senior transfer had a strong day at the Showcase, with his 4.1 pro agility trying for the second fastest of the day and his 118 inch broad jump third best. He also tested well in the 40 at 4.62, vertical with a 32.8 inch jump, and did seven reps of 185 on bench. Vincent is picking up significant recruiting interest thanks to his impressive frame, athleticism, and production - he has 25 career interceptions in three seasons of high school football.

Vincent was second team all-state in basketball and a 4x100 state qualifier in track.

Griffin Wallace, 5-11, 285.8, OL/DL, Pratt-Skyline, 2024, @griffwallace56

Wallace was a big piece on Skyline’s offensive line as just a sophomore last year, helping to clear the way for a running attack that totalled nearly 2,000 yards in nine games. Defensively, Wallace totaled 17 tackles and according to head coach Andrew Nation has “prepared himself” to see more time on the D-line this fall.

The sophomore had a strong day at the Showcase, recording six reps of 225 on bench, along with a 5.92 40, 5.12 pro agility, 20.7 inch vertical, and 75 inch broad jump. Wallace stood out in offensive line one-on-ones Saturday standing up to all comers.

Brock Weeks, 6-0, 155.8, WR, Wamego, 2024, @brock_weeks2

Weeks didn’t spend significant time on a varsity field last year, but head coach Weston Moody is confident in his young receiver being “special” this year alongside the already established trio of Hagan Johnson, Chase Cottam, and Colin Donahue.

Weeks’ Showcase performance supports Moody’s assessment. The sophomore recorded a 4.69 40, 4.52 pro agility, 32.4 inch vertical, and 114 inch broad jump - the fifth longest broad jump of the day.

Outside of football, Weeks is a member of the Red Raiders baseball team and holds a 3.0 GPA.

Jaydon Winans, 5-10, 197, RB, Rock Creek, 2023, @jaydon_winans

Winans averaged 6.94 yards on 93 carries last year, totalling 645 yards and nine TDs in Rock Creek’s high-powered offense spearheaded by QB Dalton Whitworth. The junior earned all-league honorable mention for his work in the backfield and helped the Mustangs to a 7-4 record with a Sectionals appearance. 

Winans had a good Showcase performance, clocking in at 4.63 in the 40 and 4.5 on pro agility, jumping 29.3 inches in the vertical and 100 inches in the broad jump, and repping 225 seven times on bench.

Brock Zerger, 5-11, 188, QB, Derby, 2023, @brock_zerger

Zerger did a little bit of everything for the 6A state runner-up Panthers last fall, totalling 448 total yards (210 rushing, 67 passing, 171 receiving) with five touchdowns all on the ground. This season he has a shot at securing the Panthers’ starting quarterback job with the graduation of Mercer Thatcher.

The junior didn’t hurt his chances at the Showcase, recording a 4.78 40, 4.55 pro agility, 31.5 inch vertical, 111 inch broad jump, and seven reps of 225 on bench. 

Zerger also participates in basketball and track and field, and holds a 4.156 GPA with a 25 on the ACT.
