Blue Valley Southwest quarterback Dylan Dunn has been ruining sleep schedules for defensive coordinators since taking over as signal caller for the Timberwolves during his sophomore season.
Out of the gates, the son of former K-State Wildcat and professional football quarterback Marc Dunn showed he too possessed the gunslinger gene, going 204 for 322 passing for 2,587 yards and 19 TDs with 10 interceptions through 11 games. Dunn led the state in passing yards while maintaining a solid 63% completion rate in that sophomore campaign.
Southwest struggled through that 2021 league schedule, losing four straight games after starting the season 2-2, and entered the playoffs at 2-6.
However, they proved to be Timberwolves in sheep’s clothing for their first two postseason opponents, beating Leavenworth for the second time that season in the first round of the 5A playoffs and knocking off Topeka Seaman in a high-scoring second round bout that Dunn dominated with 555 yards and four TD passes.
“Dylan’s biggest strengths are his ability to take what the defense gives him, understanding of offense and leadership skills,” head coach Anthony Orrick said.
Southwest advanced to the quarterfinals of the 5A playoffs before a loss to Mill Valley ended their season at 4-7. Dunn earned All-State and All-League honorable mention for his efforts.
Dunn continued to improve into his junior season despite a rough 0-3 start through the first three games of the year which included his three lowest yardage totals of 2022.
The junior couldn’t be kept down though, leading the Timberwolves to a 6-3 record through the final nine games of the season and into the state semifinals. Dunn threw for a combined 1,209 yards and 15 TDs through the first three games of the playoffs before finally seeing his season end one game outside of the state championship with a lopsided loss to Mill Valley.
Dunn finished the year 196 for 320 with 2,784 yards and 28 TDs to just eight interceptions, again leading the state in passing yards, and again earning All-State and All-League honorable mention.
Entering his senior season, Dunn and his Southwest teammates had some of the highest expectations in program history, with a majority of the offense back, as well as nine starters on the defensive side of the ball, and Dunn’s consistency a source of practical leadership.
“Dylan is not an overly vocal individual, but someone who leads by example and has the trust of his teammates,” Orrick said.
The Timberwolves were a force to be reckoned with in 2023 losing their only regular season game in Week 2 to defending perennial power Bishop Miege – a game in which Dunn threw for 332 yards and three TDs – in the only contest where they were held under 33 points all year, falling 51-28.
Southwest rolled through the rest of their regular season schedule, beating one EKL powerhouse after another, including defending 6A state champs Blue Valley Northwest and eventual 4A state champs Aquinas.
Dunn was again impressive in the playoffs, shredding their first three opponents with a 56-13 win over Emporia, a 52-6 win over Lansing, and 38-10 over Shawnee Heights.
For the third straight season the Timberwolves met Mill Valley in the state semifinals, and this time Dunn’s squad would close the gap.
The result was a 48-47 barnburner that saw the Jaguars come out on top on the game’s final play. Dunn was spectacular for the T-wolves, going 33 of 48 for 490 yards, 5 TDs and no interceptions.
Dunn went 274 of 375 on the year with 3,777 yards and 47 TDs to just 5 interceptions and also completed 73% of his passes with a 139 QB rating.
“He has developed in the areas of accuracy and coverage reads,” Orrick said. “He really has the ability to frustrate defenses with his eyes.”
Dunn took home the Simone Award, EKL Player of the Year, Maxpreps Kansas Player of the Year, made Top 11 teams for Sports in Kansas and KSHSAA Covered, along with the KFBCA, and was named All-State by numerous media outlets.
The senior currently holds a 4.22 GPA in the classroom and has opportunities to play collegiately at Kansas State and Lindenwood along with numerous DII and junior college programs. He continues to weigh his options but has yet to make a final decision.
