Kansas Pregame will begin to offer some localized coverage at the county and regional level on our website. This is the first installment of our new Saline County Sports Round-up which will cover cross country, football and volleyball at Salina Central, Salina South, Sacred Heart, Ell-Saline and Southeast of Saline high schools. Other fall sports coverage is not currently on the agenda due to our limited resources, but we do hope to expand in the future.
Now that it's officially fall each fall sports regular season is over a third of the way through and there's plenty to recap from last week. In our weekly Subway Sports Spotlight feature Kansas Pregame writers take a look at several notable sports stories from across the state.
Royal Valley volleyball
Coach Chuck Fessenden’s 1985 Almena-Northern Valley football team featured multiple sophomores in key roles. The Huskies returned senior running back Shane Baird, who tallied 1,573 rushing yards as a junior.
Northern Valley lost in state title games in ’82-’83 and posted a 10-2 record in ’84. In ’85 the Huskies opened 4-0 with all wins by at least 22 points.

Blue Valley Northwest runner shows inspiring determination
Blue Valley Northwest junior Liam Thurlby is legally blind, but that doesn't stop the Huskies' Cross Country runner from crossing the finish line.
Kansas Pregame is joining forces with sponsor the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference to profile Kansas student athletes competing in the KCAC. Check out the first three profiles below and look for more athlete profiles in the coming weeks.

After an exciting opening week of high school football in Kansas I think we're all ready for Week 2! The week actually got started with a number of games Thursday night, with several of those postponed until this afternoon or Saturday because of weather delays including notable games between Blue Valley/Blue Valley North and Frontenac/Colgan. Blue Valley was leading North 14-7 when the game was postponed and was scheduled to resume in the second half at 3 p.m. Friday.
