GARDEN CITY – Unlike former St. John-Hudson basketball standout Dean Wade, Mason Osborne didn’t have Division I schools knocking on his door during the 2018-19 recruiting season.

Wade, a 6-9 post/forward for the Tigers, led his high school team to state championships in 2013 (1A-I), 2014 and 2015 (2A) in playing a key role in the school’s state-record 63-game winning streak.

This weekend brings a milestone in Kansas high school sports history as athletes from 143 different high schools, representing all six classifications in Kansas, will compete in the first KSHSAA girls Regional Wrestling Tournaments in McPherson and Paola. Regionals will kick off on Valentine’s Day, Friday, Feb. 14, at 1 p.m. and continue into Saturday. The first KSHSAA sanctioned girls’ State Championship will take place Feb. 27 at Tony’s Pizza Event Center in Salina.

GARDEN CITY – It came as no surprise that the Goddard Lions prevailed as the team champion on Saturday, Feb. 1, in the 62nd annual Rocky Welton Invitational wrestling tournament.

The Lions came in as the odds-on favorite, having won the prestigious Welton team title in both 2018 and 2019, being the overall Kansas top-ranked team in 2020, and coming off an impressive dual meet triumph in Oklahoma where they beat nationally-ranked teams Allen, Texas, and Mustang, Okla.
