6A (Boys)

The 6A field at Koch Arena is set on the boys side. Every top-seed made state, with the excpetion of a gaint upset on the West side. Derby, who began sub-state with a 4-14 record and had to win a play-in game, fell just short of the state tournament with a loss in the sub-state finals. Derby destroyed fourth-ranked Topeka High, 62-26, and fell to 10th-ranked Lawrence-Free State by five points in the sub-state finals.

5A (Girls)

The best sub-state in 5A did not dissapoint. Third-ranked Wichita Heights held off sixth-ranked Maize, 45-44, in a match-up that resembled a state tournament game. The game came down to the last seconds. Laniah Randle was fouled with .5 seconds left in a tied game. After missing her first free throw, Randle hit the game-winner to send Heights to state. Maize South overcame an off the court challenge when a eligibility issue led to the forfeit of six games, but the Mavericks still won its sub-state with ease. Maize South defeated Salina Central in the finals. The only upset of 5A came with Topeka Seaman defeating ninth-ranked DeSoto, 52-33.

Hello, Chanute defeated three-time defending state champions Bishop Miege on Friday night. Brayden Frederick made a nice post move and finished with a layup in the game's final seconds to lift Chanute to a 46-45 win. Chanute's victory is generally regarded as the biggest upset of the season so far. While not quite as shocking, there was an additonal upset in 4A. Tenth-ranked Augusta knocked off sixth-ranked Abilene by 23 in the sub-state finals.
