More "upsets" on day two of State

Whether they were truly upsets or just a case of schedule disparity leading to seeding discrepancies more lower seeds took down higher seeds on day two of state tournament play.

6A Girls 
(1) Liberal (22-0) vs. (8) Olathe Northwest (15-7) Update: Olathe Northwest won 57-46
(4) Topeka (20-2) vs. (5) Olathe East (18-4) Update: Topeka won 59-52 in OT
(2) Derby (21-0) vs. (7) Shawnee Mission Northwest (16-6) Update: Derby won 60-27
(3) Washburn Rural (20-2) vs. Olathe North (16-5) Update: Washburn Rural won 49-41

Topeka defeated Olathe Northwest 52-49, Washburn Rural defeated Derby 45-40

Championship: Topeka vs. Washburn Rural

Perhaps the biggest story of the night, Washburn Rural delivered Derby its first loss in over a year in a hard-fought 45-40 game. Derby had defeated every team by at least 12 points entering the semifinals. Rural will face a 22-2 Topeka squad which held off eight-seed Olathe Northwest, 52-49.

Semifinals: Washburn Rural defeated Wichita Southeast 55-47, Blue Valley Northwest defeated Shawnee Mission South 61-57

The top two seeds in 6A have advanced to the finals. Washburn Rural held off Wichita Southeast, while Blue Valley Northwest edged Shawnee Mission South by four.

Semifinals: St. Thomas Aquinas defeated McPherson 44-36, Blue Valley Southwest defeated KC Schlagle 43-41

Championship: St. Thomas Aquinas vs. Blue Valley Southwest

In a battle of two of the most accomplished high school basketball programs in Kansas, St. Thomas Aquinas held off McPherson, 44-36. St. Thomas Aquinas advances to its fourth straight state title game where seven-seed Blue Valley Southwest awaits. BVSW held off Kansas City Schlagle, 43-41, in the semifinals.

(4) Andover Central (19-3) vs. (5) Pittsburg (18-3) Update: Andover Central won 78-61
(2) Bonner Springs (20-2) vs. (7) Bishop Carroll (17-5) Update: Bishop Carroll won 87-70
(3) Basehor Linwood (19-2) vs. (6) Salina Central (17-5) Update: Basehor-Linwood won 60-46

Semifinals: Andover Central defeated Maize 74-66, Basehor-Linwood defeated Bishop Carroll 69-68

The semifinal matchup between Maize and Andover Central felt like a state championship game. On the other hand, so did the Bishop Carroll and Basehor-Linwood game. A true state champion will be decided between Andover Central and Basehor-Linwood, after both teams survived stiff challenges. Andover Central delivered Maize its first loss of the season, while Basehor-Linwood knocked off the defending state champions, 69-68.

(1) Kansas City Piper (21-0) vs. (8) Eudora (16-5) Update: Kansas City Piper won 52-35
(4) Abilene (20-2) vs. (5) Nickerson (19-3) Update: Abilene won 54-46
(2) Bishop Miege (21-0) vs. (7) Circle (17-4) Update: Bishop Miege won 74-41
(3) Baldwin (19-1) vs. (6) Ulysses (18-4) Update: Baldwin won 47-41

Semifinals: Kansas City Piper defeated Nickerson 72-40, Bishop Miege defeated Baldwin 74-44

Championship: Kansas City Piper vs. Bishop Miege

This year's 4A state championship feels a lot like last year's 4A-Division I state championship. This year, Kansas City-Piper will look to play the part of McPherson and knock off Bishop Miege in the finals. This battle of unbeatens should be as good a game as any on Saturday in the state of Kansas.

The Kansas City-Piper boys will play for a state championship following the Kansas City-Piper girls. The boys will have a favorable matchup against seventh-seed Augusta, who already has upset wins over Andale and Chapman.

(4) Nemaha Central (20-3) vs. (5) Clay Center (18-4) Update: Nemaha Central won 52-42

(3) Eureka (20-3) vs. (6) Royal Valley (18-5) Update: Royal Valley 56-36

Semifinals: Cheney defeated Nemaha Central 60-48, Royal Valley defeated Norton 53-44

Championship: Cheney vs. Royal Valley

Top-seed Cheney has now won both of its games by double-digits after knocking off Nemaha Central team, 60-48, that entered the game 21-3. There, Cheney will meet six-seed Royal Valley, who held off Norton in the semifinals.

Beloit's incredible season is one win away from a state championship with a 62-53 win over Perry-Lecompton. Girard is waiting after sending upset-minded Thomas More Prep home.

(3) Sterling (19-4) vs. (6) Jackson Heights (17-5) Update: Sterling won 66-58

Semifinals: Garden Plain defeated Wabaunsee 55-51 in OT, Sterling defeated WaKeeney-Trego 67-49

Championship: Garden Plain vs. Sterling

Four-seed Garden Plain held off top-seed Wabaunsee in overtime to advance to the championship. Garden Plain will face a fast and aggressive Sterling team that raced past WaKeeney-Trego, 67-49.

Championship: Ness City vs. Trinity Catholic

The top seed is out in 2A courtesy of Ness City. The Eagles held off an Inman team, 71-66, to advance to the finals where they will meet Trinity Catholic. Hutch Trinity is the No. 1 team in 2A according to the last KBCA rankings.

Central Plains and Hanover both cruised to semifinal victories. Hanover will be looking to play spoiler to a Central Plains win streak that is in the triple digits.

St. John Hudson has now defeated Hanover (24-1) and Osborne (24-0) in consecutive nights. Can St. John win its biggest test against top-ranked Central Plains? That will be answered on Saturday.
